It was a terrible showing for Mike Swick tonight. He and Josh Burkman did not do much of anything. It was jab, jab, clinch, clinch. Each seemed way too tentative.
Patrick Cote on the other hand, did well in knocking out the always tough, Drew McFedries. I'm still a little concerned with the amount of punches Cote takes to get the knockout, but that's a worry for another day.

UFC 80
UFC 80 is 3 days away and there's hardly any buzz for it. After the main event, it's a fairly lacklustre card. Penn vs Stevenson should be a dandy (I'm betting on Penn) but after that, there's not much else. The "2nd" main event is Werdum vs Gonzaga. While Gonzaga has main evented before, he's usually in the sidekick position like he was when he upset CroCop and lost to Randy Couture. Werdum's last fight was so awfully boring he got put on the shelf for 8 months, and the other culprit that won the fight, Andre Arlovski is still sitting on the bench!! Though that may not be fair to say, Arlovski actually only has 1 fight remaining on his contract and I believe the UFC would like him to re-sign before giving him another fight. This may backfire as I see this move antagonizing Arlovski, and his contract (fight or no fight) expires April 2008.

UFC in Canada
The UFC is finally coming to Canada.
April 19, 2008 in the Bell Centre at Montreal. The main event is undisputed 170lb champ Matt Serra vs. interim champ (and Montreal native) Georges St. Pierre. We'll find out if Serra is a one-hit wonder (I'm betting he is, against St. Pierre anyways). I see St. Pierre taking him down this time and avoiding Serra's wild haymakers. As well, Serra is coming off of two herniated discs in his back, and a one year layoff. Add in the fact come fight night he will be a few weeks shy of his 34th birthday, we'll have a brand new champ on April 19th.

Poster Boys
I'm not sure what is worse. Fight organizations that protect their golden boy fighters, or the golden boys that accept the cream-puff fight.
UFC's UK poster boy, Michael "the Count" Bisping recently dropped down to 185lbs after dropping a decision at UFC 78 to Rashad Evans, is taking on Charles "Captain Miserable" McCarthy. He's the poor schlub you see on the highlight reels, taking a spinning back kick from David Loiseau and doubling over in agony. Once Bisping disposes of this tin can, they will declare that he's "back on the road to a title shot!!"
Wrong. He will have just defeated a "never-was" fighter. McCarthy isn't even a "has been" because he....you get the idea.
Did I mention the UFC once fed Mike Bisping a guy by the name of Elvis "the King of Rock n' Rumble" Sinosic? Cool nickname....god-awful record. Evlis was 8 wins, 10 losses at that point. Elvis has since gone on and gotten knocked out in 21 seconds by the man himself, Paul Cahoon.
Exactly, Paul who?

creepy
Fedor Emelianenko, the number 1 ranked heavyweight in the world, recently won an MMA fight againsts 7'4" Hong Man Choi (aka Techno Goliath) of Korea at Yarennoka in Japan on New Year's Eve. While the fight was a spectacle while it lasted, the biggest thing to come out of that fight, in my opinion, is the groping actor Jean-Claude Van Damme did to Fedor after the bout. Check out the .gif file.

I think the head-tilt at the end of the grope wigs me out the most, after his weird smile. Actually, the whole thing creeps me out. That's Van Damme!! That's Frank Dux of Bloodsport, who took out Chong Li in a legendary underground bare knuckle tournament. Yeah I know it was a movie, but still. What makes it even funnier is that he pulled his grope n' wink to quite possibly the toughest man on the planet!! Now that takes some guts!!
Note Fedor's manager swooping in and rescuing his fighter shortly after.

Sherk/Koscheck
Just watched an interview with Sean Sherk, former lightweight champ of the UFC. Says he's innocent and on the comeback trail. What a nightmare. I've yet to see an exciting fight involving this guy. He's what Tim Sylvia is to the heavyweight division. Big Tim leans on people in the cage, Sean is the blanket. Here's hoping he loses his next few fights and UFC drops him from my tv.
Josh Koscheck...is also coming back at UFC 82 against Dustin Hazelett. He's another 90% wrestler, 10% boxer. If you watch his fight against Jeff Joslin, Joslin is cleanly winning until Josh "Sherks" him and continually takes him down, and, and, and holds him there.
I like groundwork, as long as it's exciting and you're working. Out with human blankets!!

welcome back
Wow, it's been a while. Lots has changed in the UFC since I last logged on. It would take forever to go over everything, so I'll just touch on the latest happenings, UFC 79.
Overall, a good card. The Sanchez/Palelei bout nearly put me to sleep; thankfully the referee stepped in and saved the fans from a TKO. Matt Hughes is in a tough spot now, much like Rich Franklin in the middleweight division. He's clearly the second best fighter in the division, but the champion is in another league. So does he plod on, taking out the mid-card fighters? Or challenge the champ and get "dummied" up again? I feel a bit bad for Franklin as he seems like a decent guy, even though he is one of UFC's "boys" but I don't feel bad for Hughes, who seems like a genuine jerk.
Idea: Why doesn't the UFC line up Mirko CroCop vs. Andrei Arlovski?
